Sound artists unstuck in time, Trap.Avoid create lustrous landscapes which scan electronic music history for mesmerizing concoctions which would (just) feel right next to everyone from Giorgio Morodor to Liquid Liquid to Orbital to Ratatat. The room doesn’t spin, life doesn’t break into its essential elements, and the listener may not be riddled with epiphanies of existential truths; Trap.Avoid merely creates haunting and brilliantine grooved-out keyboard instrumentals with hints of Chicago House and Italo Disco, grounded in enticing melodies as fit to please a dance pop raver as warm the cockles of a Can-loving experimental music buff‘s heart.
Trap.Avoid is the Brooklyn pair of Patrick Billard (aka DJ Duckcomb) and Gerrard Garone. Billard cut his teeth in the beat-happy twosome Sharegroove while Garone made numerous national appearances in the mid-‘00s as the keyboardist for post-funk-punk sensation Radio 4. “Elevator,” the duo’s Dither Down debut, snakes in slowly, building step-by-step from a familiar, yet undeniable drum-pattern, up to a shimmering and funky crescendo, a masala of Kraftwerk-esque hooks surrounded by surreal bells and whistles. The extended single features the original mix, plus re-imaginations ranging from sample-funk to disco punk by fellow Brooklynites Inflagranti (Codek), Populette (Throne Of Blood), and 33Hz (FoolHouse, Dither Down).
